Caccini and his circle La Nuova Musica Dir. David Bates
SOMMCD 083
La Nuova Musica Directed by David Bates
Giulio Caccini and his Circle gives SOMM the opportunity to explore new territory with this young and wonderful Ensemble – La Nuova Musica – founded last year by countertenor and Director David Bates. The Ensemble consists of six singers, harpsichord and chitarrone in a recording which includes Songs from Caccini’s Nuove Musiche as well as Madrigals and instrumental pieces by Monteverdi, Castaldi, Kapsberger, Frescobaldi and Peter Philips.
The name of the Ensemble, Nuova Musica, is taken from Giulio Caccini’s treatise of 1602, Le Nuove Musiche, which is concerned with vocal production, the so-called “sprezzatura” – the unforced ease of accomplishment and sense of effortless superiority -- and how best to move the passions.
To date La Nuova Musica has performed many wide-ranging programmes in a wide variety of venues. They look forward to an exciting season of concerts. Among other engagements they travel to Aldeburgh for a residency in March, and as part of the Easter Aldeburgh Festival will perform Schulz’s Musikalisches Exequiem and Bach Motets in Blytheburgh Church on Good Friday. In May they will perform Monteverdi Vespers and Grandi motets at the Wigmore Hall and Handel’s Acis and Galatea at the 2009 London Handel Festival with Lucy Crowe and Mark Wilde. A second disc with SOMM Recordings, of Purcell’s and Blow’s song and instrumental works is to be recorded in December 2008.
